BROCKTON, Mass. — A Brockton firefighter suffered minor injuries after falling through the stairs while battling a house fire Tuesday night.

The residents were not home when the fire broke out shortly before 8 p.m., on Tilton Ave.

The firefighter was climbing the stairs to the second floor when he fell through the staircase, through the first floor and into the basement, Brockton Fire Chief Brian Nardelli told Boston 25 News.

The injured firefighter was able to get up and out on his own, suffering minor injuries to his lower extremities, Nardelli said.

While he wanted to stay on the scene, he was ordered to be evaluated at Good Samaritan Hospital.

“They actually had to tell him to stop, because he was going to go back in and start working again,” Nardelli said. “And we had to order him to go to the hospital and get looked at. So, he’s okay. Scary situation. It’s not easy to fall two floors. They’ll do a full medical workup on him.”

Nardelli said the entire Brockton fire department recognizes the outcome could have been much worse and they are grateful their brother is doing well.

According to Nardelli the cause appears to be electrical in nature.
