Boston plastic bag ban set to resume Thursday

BOSTON — Boston’s plastic bag ban that took effect in December 2018 was temporarily suspended in the city to help combat COVID-19.

In March, Mayor Walsh issued a temporary Executive Order allowing plastic bag use in Boston during the public health emergency.

The moratorium related to the ban ended on Wednesday.

Effective Thursday, the Inspectional Services Department’s Weights and Measures Division will resume enforcing the ordinance.

Retail stores must comply with the ordinance requirements by doing the following:

  • Supply compliant reusable, recyclable or compostable checkout bags
  • Charge a fee (5 cents minimum per bag)
  • Display a sign within five feet of the checkout location, telling customers that they will have to pay for a big if they want one

Businesses found violating the ordinance will be issued a warning for the initial violation. Additional violations will result in fines.
