Boston Harbor Cruises snaps pic of season's first humpback whale sighting

The New England Aquarium says its first humpback whale sighting means spring has sprung.

People on a whale watching cruise run by Boston Harbor Cruises got a glimpse of the season’s first humpback whales at the Stellwages Bank National Marine Sanctuary 25 miles east of Boston Wednesday morning.

According to a release from the New England Aquarium, the whale was an adult female named Ursa. She can be identified by the long orca whale bite scars on her tail, the aquarium says. She was travelling with another humpback whale named Batcave.

The pair were taking long dives in search of food after a long winter without much in the way of prey, according to the New England Aquarium.
