LOWELL — The body of a Chelmsford woman reported missing last month has been found in the Merrimack River, the district attorney has announced.
Susan Willand was reported missing out of Chelmsford on Dec. 20, 2019.
Her body was found in the Merrimack River near 145 Pawtucket St. in Lowell, Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement Friday. An employee of a private company using a rake machine to dredge the Merrimack River found her body at approximately 10 a.m.
Willand was last seen on Dec. 20 at approximately 8 a.m. on Kennedy Drive in North Chelmsford. After she disappeared, investigators searched the area and asked for the public’s help to try and locate her.
A preliminary investigation does not indicate any foul play.
“We are grateful to the members of the community who kept Ms. Willand and her family in their thoughts over these past several weeks as we called upon them to help locate her. Today is a sad ending to that search,” said Ryan.
“This is a tragic ending to a very sad incident. On behalf of the entire community, I want to extend my thoughts to the family at this difficult time," Chelmsford Police Chief James Spinney said.
