A Beverly man was convicted of murder after his wife was strangled in 2015, according to the Essex County District Attorney's Office.
A jury found 48-year-old Beverly native Axel Scherer guilty of second-degree murder after evidence proved he was criminally responsible when he strangled his wife, Edith "Edie" Black-Scherer in a bedroom.
Scherer allegedly went to the Beverly Police station and told an officer that he had killed his wife, and she was transported to Beverly Hospital before she died five days later.

"The life of a vibrant, loving woman and mother was taken much too soon and no verdict can change that,” Essex County District Attorney Jonathan W. Blodgett said. “It is my hope that everyone who loved Edie will find some peace knowing that the man responsible is being held accountable for his actions.”
A judge will impose Scherer's sentence on February 26, with second-degree murder punishable by a life sentence with the possibility of parole after 15 to 25 years.
