Back to School Surprise: Mrs. Hammonds, University Park Campus School in Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- All work and all play makes strong mathematicians! One Worcester teacher is determined to help her students love math and succeed.

Last week, the principal at University Park Campus School in Worcester helped FOX25's Daniel Miller surprise Shannon Hammond's 9th grade math class.

Mrs. Hammonds teaches 9th, 11th and 12th grade math and is one of hundreds of teachers who signed up on DonorsChoose.org requesting tools and supplies to help teach their students. Dozens of people donated to help, including FOX25.

"Curiosity is the most important thing that anybody can have," said Mrs. Hammonds. "I try to give them the things that will help to feed that curiosity so when they graduate, they are still asking the questions and seeking the knowledge."

Mrs. Hammonds says one of the difficulties she sees as a teacher is students struggling with visualization, both in math class and out in the community.

She says by having certain tools to help with visualization, it will help her students have hands on learning and the awareness they need to be strong mathematicians and problem-solvers.

FOX25 News is joining the support for teachers in need. From Aug. 31 until Sept. 11, FOX25 is surprising teachers who have posted their needs through DonorsChoose. We hope you will also consider donating to teachers in need by visiting http://www.donorschoose.org.
