Back to School Surprise: Mrs. Avelino, Washington Elementary School in Lowell

LOWELL, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Developing reading skills is a top priority for Mrs. Avelino at Washington Elementary School in Lowell.

Mrs. Avelino wanted to start a book club for her fourth grade class, but her school budget simply didn't cover all the expenses.

Mrs. Avelino put her wish list on the website DonorsChoose.org and FOX25 donated along with others to make sure her class could have the books they need. FOX25's Michael Henrich was able to surprise Mr.s Avelino's class with a visit.

"I'm ecstatic!" Mrs. Avelino told FOX25.  "I'm so grateful that you donated to our book club and that we're going to be able to kick off the year with new books and the kids will be so engaged and read it together and come in and talk about it.  It's wonderful!"

FOX25 News is joining the support for teachers in need. From Aug. 31 until Sept. 11, FOX25 is surprising teachers who have posted their needs through DonorsChoose, org. We hope you will also consider donating to teachers in need by visiting http://www.donorschoose.org.
