AUBURN, Mass. — An autopsy to determine the cause of death for a 2 year old from Worcester was inconclusive according to the Worcester County district Attorney.

In August, Avalena Conway Coxon and a 22-month-old toddler were found unresponsive at the home of their foster mother Kimberly Malpass in Auburn.

They were both taken to UMass Medical Center in Worcester where Avalena died. The other child is alive and is in DCF custody.

Avalena's grandparents David and Diane Coxon spoke with FOX25's Ted Daniel about their struggle as they deal with the death.

“I don’t understand it Ted.  I just can’t wrap this old empty head around something that is that obvious,” David said.

After that incident, an investigation found that at the time of Avalena's death Malpass had lied about her live-in boyfriend.

In October, a report determined that both children had suffered heat stroke indicating they had prolonged exposure to a high temperature environment.

Two weeks after Avalena's death her biological mother also died of a suspected drug overdose. They are burried together.

Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early says the investigation into Avalena’s death is continuing.
