BEDFORD, Mass. — A 9-year old boy from Bedford was honored Friday for being a hero.

State Fire Marshal Peter Ostroskey went to Lane Elementary School to present Jacoby Garber with the Young Hero award.

Two days before Christmas, Jacoby and his father where at home when smoke alarms started going off.

Meanwhile, Jacoby calmly called 911 and told the dispatcher exactly what was going on.

His father noticed smoke coming from the garage and went there to investigate.

“My name is Jacoby Garber and there’s a fire at [address] in Bedford, Mass,” he can be heard telling a 911 dispatcher.

No one was hurt in the fire, thanks to Jacoby's quick thinking. After calling 911, he went to get his mother.

“She was getting up and she was like oh stop joking, and I told her to get out now," he said.

Jacboy was the first kid from Bedford to be given the Young Hero's award; it's only been given out about 300 times in Massachusetts' history.

“I was in assembly and I kind of knew they were going to do it because I saw the fire trucks outside and I realized once they said for Jacoby to come up," he said.

Jacoby says he remembered a lesson he learned in school two months earlier when a firefighter taught him to call 911.
