BOURNE — Boston 25 has learned that at least 60 residents of an assisted living facility in Bourne are quarantined after a resident has tested positive for COVID-19.
The woman, who lives in the “Independent Living” wing of Cape Cod Senior Residences, is known to be active in the community. On Friday, she had a slight fever and she drove herself to the hospital.
“On Sunday, she wasn’t feeling well, drove herself to the emergency room,” said Robert Larkin, president of Cape Cod Senior Residences. "The resident sent us a text informing us of her diagnosis."
Now, no one is allowed inside the facility.
Larkin said the woman has underlying health issues and is now in the intensive care unit where she is being carefully monitored.
The woman tried to alert health officials the day before about what she was feeling.
“She was told she was not qualified for the COVID-19 test. She was diagnosed with something else and sent home with a prescription,” Larkin said.
Larkin said the facility has been taking extra precautions after 35 deaths at Life Care Center Nursing Facility in Seattle, Washington.
“Every staff person that enters the community has a health screening, as does every visitor, and resident, including taking of temperature,” Larkin said.
The seniors are now having meals delivered to them in their apartments, and activities have been limited to one-on-ones.
In the meantime, signs are posted at the door, saying “Suspended visitor policy.”
Staff members are also helping residents set up FaceTime interviews with family members.
Officials wouldn’t go into details about where that woman was over the weekend, or who she may have come in contact with.
