SUDBURY, Mass. — A woman has died following a head-on crash with a school bus.

Police in Sudbury tell FOX25 nearly a dozen people were hurt when a sedan and a school bus were involved in a crash Wednesday afternoon.

The driver of the sedan, 73-year-old Patricia Metz of Sudbury, was trapped inside the car when emergency responders arrived and had to be removed with the Jaws of Life. She was taken to a Boston hospital with what Sudbury Police Chief Scott Nix describes as serious injuries. Thursday morning, police confirmed that Metz had succumbed to her injuries.

Nix said there were around 25 students on the bus, which was carrying the Algonquin Regional High School girls rugby team to Lincoln Sudbury High School.

"Any call that involves our youth. Our youth are our future and that's where it can really hit home so it ramps our response up,” Nix said.

No one on the bus was seriously injured, but nine students and the bus driver were taken to MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham with minor injuries.

"Some complaints of shoulder injuries. Some whiplash. I think there was a concern that one may have struck her head and developing a concussion. But they all appear to be minor,” Nix said.

One of the coaches on the bus is also an emergency room nurse who helped triage the injuries until police could respond.

Police tell FOX25 they are still investigating the cause of the crash and it's unclear which vehicle crossed the center line.
