ORLEANS, Mass. — Nauset Beach was packed for of people enjoying one last long weekend before the end of summer when a shark sighting sent everyone back to shore.

Around 12:30 p.m. Monday, lifeguards began frantically ordering everyone out of the water.

“People were just freaking out they were freaking out,” beachgoer Brandon Latham said. “I just saw like blood.”

“The lifeguard came by and said there was a shark and a seal a little bit and then an airplane came and did a cruise by to see where it was,” beachgoer Manny Dias said.

The shark was spotted feasting on a seal about 100 feet from shore – leaving behind a pool of blood.

Once everyone was out of the water, terror turned to fascination.

“Everyone just ran to the area and just like they do standing on shore trying to see something – people get very excited – it’s a shark and it’s pretty cool,” Latham said.

This is the second time in about two weeks that a shark was spotted here attacking a seal.

On Aug. 20 a shark devoured its prey close to surfers at Nauset Beach. Just three days later, what was likely a great white shark bit a man’s paddleboard in Welfleet at Marconi Beach.

Several close calls this summer – but no one has been hurt.

“They’ve always been here but now it’s like more prominent,” Latham said.
