DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — A man accused of defrauding Massachusetts investors out of millions and absconding under false identities has been arrested in Florida, according to federal investigators.
Scott Wolas, 67, allegedly took off with about $1.5 million in real estate investments for development of the former Beachcomber Bar property in Quincy. Wolas had accepted investments under the name Eugene Grathwohl, investigators say.
But Wolas was already a fugitive. According to police, he has been on the run for 20 years after a grand theft and larceny indictment in New York.
Wolas allegedly used the aliases Allen Hengst, Drew Prescott, Frank Amolsch, Endicott Asquith and Cameron Sturge while on the run, until he was arrested in Delray Beach, Fla. on Friday.
He has been charged with wire fraud and aggravated identity theft. Investigators say Eugene Grathwohl, in reality, is a friend of Wolas’s ex-wife.
After appearing in a Florida courtroom, Wolas is slated to be returned to Massachusetts to appear in Boston federal court.
