18-year-old killed in stabbing near UMass campus in Lowell, authorities say

LOWELL, Mass. — An 18-year-old Lowell man was killed in a stabbing Monday night, authorities said.

Lowell Police responded to a reported stabbing in the area of Lawrence Drive near the University of Massachusetts Lowell campus at approximately 7 p.m., Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan said in a statement.

The victim was taken to Lowell General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The victim was not a student at UMass Lowell.

"This is an active investigation," Ryan said. There was no word on arrests or any suspects.

The death was the city's first homicide of the year.
