FALL RIVER, Mass. — A 14-year-old boy has died after police say he was pulled from a pond in Fall River, Massachusetts Tuesday.

The boy, identified by Bristol County District Attorney Thomas M. Quinn III as Fall River native Eddiel Benitez, and a 13-year-old friend jumped into the pond from a rocky ledge shortly before 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon.

Police say both of them immediately showed signs of distress in the water and three adult bystanders rushed into rescue them. The 13-year-old girl was rescued from the water, but the boy did not resurface.

Fall River police were called in to help find him. He wasn't pulled out of the water until about 40 minutes later.

Benitez was rushed to St. Anne's Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

"The water was choppy today," Fall River Fire Chief John Lynch said. "The visibility was one to two feet for the divers in the water."
