METHUEN, Mass. — Ten giant show horses have been rescued by the MSPCA after their owner was unable to care for them.

According to MSPCA-Nevins Farm, the Percheron horses are about a foot taller than typical horses and by far the largest animals living at the facility. They were previously show horses, but they're breed is also often used to pull carriages.

Nine of the horses are male, and one is female. All 10 were underweight and had hoof and dental issues requiring veterinary care.

"We see some ribs and spines showing on some of the horses, so getting everyone to a healthy weight and comfortably settling them is the priority at this early stage," said Nevins Farm barn manager Gia Barss.  "We'll also need to address some other concerns such as overgrown hooves and dental issues."

The needed procedures are expected to cost about $5,000, so the MSPCA has set up an online fundraiser to help cover the expense.

"Some of these guys are partners and it would be nice to adopt them out as a pair, but we don't have to adopt out all ten of them to one place,” Roger Lauze from MSPCA Nevins-Farm said.
