Copy of Teen armed robbery suspect surrenders holding infant

ROCKLAND, Mass. — A teen suspect has surrendered after a standoff with Rockland Police and SWAT.

According to police, the incident began at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday with an alleged armed robbery on Howard Street in Rockland. Police say a firearm was shown before the suspect fled.

He was seen entering the third-floor apartment of a triple-decker on Church Street. Police say the second suspect, a relative of the first, was believed to already be inside.

The SWAT team was called to the scene to assist in the barricaded situation.

Police evacuated the first and second floors of the home and sent a reverse 911 call to residents in the area telling them to stay inside and away from windows.

Once the SWAT team arrived, the two suspects quickly surrendered.

SWAT moved toward the nearby multi-family home to bring the two teenage suspects into custody.

One of them would walk out with a baby in one arm, holding the other in the air.

Hours after he was suspected of robbing a driver in a Rockland neighborhood at gunpoint, 19-year-old Ivan Andujar surrendered in the face of a swarming SWAT presence. An innocent life in his possession at the time of his arrest.

"The first suspect came out carrying an infant," said the Rockland Police Chief. "We knew there was an infant and younger children in the house. We were cautious and aware of that."

Dozens of authorities descended on the triple-decker on Church Street to take Andujar and his 17-year-old brother into custody.

The windows of the multi-family that was surrounded became the focus of a drone used by police to monitor the movement of the two brothers and young children also inside.

"This is what we’ve evolved to with technology and equipment," the Police Chief said. "Drone up, see them through window. Technology allowed us to slow everything down, see there were children in the house [and] make sure no one on either side were injured."

The massive police presence staged behind a local family's house. That family hit the decks with their 1-year-old son.

"We actually put him down and [had him] drink a bottle because at last that way he's on the ground and not near any of the windows," said Amy Sproules.

"Knowing that they're known to police and 150 yards away from a house where we're raising kids, it's a little scary," Amy added.

"Maybe this is their wake-up call," said Chris Sproules. "It's time to change your life."

Police only charged the older Andujar at this time, but investigators suspect both brothers could be involved in a similar robbery involving a driver in the same neighborhood earlier this month.

Police are waiting on a search warrant to look for the gun they believed was used in Tuesday’s robbery. That victim was robbed of $40, a cellphone, a wallet and a backpack.
