Red Sox manager Alex Cora's life in baseball showcased in new documentary

After a historic first season at the helm in the dugout at Fenway Park, Alex Cora's year as the Red Sox manager and rise in baseball will be showcased in the latest edition of "MLB Network Presents."

The documentary, entitled "Alex Cora: The Making of a Champion," highlights Cora's life in baseball, starting with his childhood in Caguas, Puerto Rico and his path to becoming the first Puerto Rican-born manager to win the World Series.

The 45-minute film features interviews with Cora himself, along with managers Terry Francona and A.J. Hinch, Red Sox pitchers Chris Sale and Nathan Eovaldi, and Red Sox executives Sam Kennedy and Dave Dombrowski.

The documentary starts with Cora's origin, as Cora, his mother and brother recall the Red Sox manager's upbringing, sharing the emotional story of his father's influence on his family members' lives.

Each interview showcases a different element of Cora's management style, starting with his time as a player and transitioning to his new role in the dugout.

"Alex was always ready to do whatever you asked him to do," Francona said. "When you get a guy that is a bench player that can play multiple days or he’ll go pick somebody up in a blowout game and it’s not beneath him, those are qualities that separates guys and Alex certainly had those.”

Hinch, the Astros manager who had Cora as his bench coach when the team won the 2017 World Series, praised Cora's intelligence when it comes to the sport.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever been around someone with a better baseball mind than Alex Cora," Hinch said.

Cora's dedication to Puerto Rico is also featured throughout the documentary, beginning with his mission to bring aid to the islan after Hurricane Maria in January of 2018, and his return after the Red Sox won the World Series 10 months later.

"To me, that was just remarkable and speaks volumes about who Alex Cora is as a person," Kennedy, the team's president and CEO, said.

The documentary airs Tuesday night at 9 p.m. on the MLB Network.
