Red Sox: LHP Chris Sale placed on 10-day IL with 'elbow inflammation'

BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox announced Saturday evening that pitcher Chris Sale has been placed on the 10-day Injured List with left elbow inflammation, retroactive to August 14.

Reliever Ryan Brasier has been recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket to take Sale's place on the roster.

Sale (6-11) is coming off of a start against Cleveland where he gave up three earned runs across six and two-thirds innings while striking out 12 batters. That start came on August 13, a day before Sale's IL stint retroactively began.

Dombrowski reportedly told the media on Saturday that Sale felt stiffness in his left arm following his start in Cleveland, but waited to tell the team until Friday, according to the Associated Press. Sale's MRI results will be looked over by Dr. James Andrews on Monday at the earliest, per the AP.

The lefty ace has struck out a dozen hitters in two of his three starts in the month of August. He will be eligible to return to the rotation on Saturday, August 24 when the Red Sox take on the San Diego Padres in southern California.

Sale was slated to pitch on Tuesday, August 20 against the Phillies at Fenway Park before Dave Dombrowski, Boston's President of Baseball Operations, made the announcement.

In 44 appearances this season, Brasier (2-3) has amassed a 4.24 earned-run average and has converted seven saves. Sale's ERA in 2019 is 4.40 in his 25 starts.
