Marchand suspended five games for cheap shot

NEW YORK - Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand  has been suspended for five games, without pay, for elbowing New Jersey Devils forward Marcus Johansson on Tuesday, Jan. 23, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today.

Marchand's elbow hit Johansson in the head toward the end of a play in front of the Devils' net. Marchand swung his elbow up and to his right, striking Johansson and sending him to the ice.

Johansson left the game and didn't return in the final two minutes of the Devils' 3-2 loss to the Bruins.

No penalty was called on the play.

Marchand is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and, based on his average annual salary, will forfeit $373,475.60.
