You can now use your E-ZPass to fill up your gas tank

Paying for gas with cash and debit cards may soon be a thing of the past.

E-ZPass has partnered with PayByCar to allow customers to pay for gas using only their cellphones.

"We eliminate eight out of 12 steps. No credit card, no putting it in, no interaction with the pump at all except for fueling," said PayByCar COO Anand Raman.

It works using antennas.

When you drive up to the pump, E-ZPass recognizes your car and sends you a text asking if you want to use your account to pay for your gas. Once you reply with the pump number, it automatically turns on the pump and all you do next is pump your gas.

E-ZPass and PayByCar rolled out the program on Tuesday.

"This is the first nationwide launch of PayByCar," said Raman.

Right now, you can only use it at the Alltown Mobil Gas Station in Westborough, but drivers we spoke with are already looking forward to PayByCar expanding to gas stations throughout the country.

"I'd definitely use it. To be able to use the E-ZPass on the highway and on here would be easier than having to use your card when you pull up to the pump every time," said driver Chris Wadley.

PayByCar says this is only the beginning and they plan to expand the program to restaurants and convenience stores.
