Yarmouth Sgt. Sean Gannon to be honored in DC for National Police Week

The family of fallen Yarmouth Police Sergeant Sean Gannon is preparing to honor his sacrifice in Washington D.C. for National Police Week. Gannon will be one of 144 officers to be honored during National Police Week, all killed last year while serving and protecting.

"It has not let up since April 12, 2018, since the day it happened," said Denise Morency Gannon.

Not a day goes by where Denise Morency Gannon doesn't think about the son she lost. She says there also hasn't been a day without a reminder that others are also thinking of him.

"We have not gone a day without two or three messages, mail, awards, memorials, there hasn't been a cessation of any of that," said Gannon.

From the strangers who approach her in public. To the letters filled with love and support. Some of them from children.

"Every small gesture does not go unnoticed," she said.

She says these messages continue to charge her family's spirits in their journey forward and give them hope that Sean's legacy is eternal.

"The loss of his mortal life is not in vain," said Gannon.

Just one month after the one year anniversary of Sean Gannon's murder, his mother keeps his police badge in close reach as she prepares for a new milestone in honoring his sacrifice.

"This will be almost like living through the event from day one again," she said.

The love of Sean's life is already making the trek to DC by bicycle with Yarmouth Detective Mike Wells in her husband's honor.

Dara Gannon sent video to her mother-in-law during the 300-mile, four-date Police Unity Tour ride from New Jersey to DC.

"I think he's just riding right alongside her... cheering her on... I think he must be so proud," she said. "I couldn't have asked for a better daughter-in-law."

The Police Unity Tour has raised more than $23 million for the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Based on the constant support the family has been getting, Denise is hopeful that a cultural shift is underway in respect toward law enforcement.
