Woburn teen paralyzed after accidental shooting

Devastated is how the family of 19-year-old Jamiel Evans feels Monday night.

“Right now he’s being kept alive by the tracheotomy they put in. He cannot breathe air on his own yet,” said Jennifer Evans, who is Jamil’s mother.

Evan said her son was at the apartment of his best friend Alec Augustino Braz on Mt. Pleasant Street in Woburn on Saturday night. Woburn Police said Jamil was accidentally shot while inside that apartment.

“He’s paralyzed from the neck down. However, they are hoping he’ll be able to regain movement in his right arm so that he will at least be able to operate the wheelchair on his own,” said Jennifer Evans as she fought back tears.

Evans was not in court but by her son’s bedside all day on Monday begging doctors do all they can for her son.

“I asked so many questions to see if there was anything that they could possibly do. They said so far that right now with the technology and science they have, they have nothing they can do for him,” Evans said.

She said her son’s hopes and dreams were shattered in an instant.

“He had his whole life ahead of him. All he wanted to do was be successful and get his career settled down, have a family of his own, and raise kids. This is what he would talk about. These were his goals and now everything has been taken away from him,” Evans said.

The family has started a GoFundMe page to help with Jamil’s road to recovery.
