Wareham Police seek driver who allegedly tried to run over officer

WAREHAM, Mass. — Wareham Police are looking for a man they say tried to run over an officer working detail.

A Wareham Police officer was working detail on Hathaway Street just before 11 a.m. Monday when he recognized a driver that passed by him.

Police say 29-year-old Jazz Tavares drove by with a female passenger, but Tavares had a revoked driver's license. The officer stopped Tavares and told him about his license.

Tavares reportedly replied, "I can't believe you are doing this to me while you're on detail."

The officer says that's when Tavares stepped on the gas, forcing him to jump out of the way to avoid being hit.

The car was seen several minutes later on Cranberry Highway. Officers pulled the car over, but Tavares wasn't in the car and the female passenger, identified as 26-year-old Kristina Boucher-Szwedko of Mattapoisett, was now behind the wheel. Police say she was uncooperative and arrested for accessory after the fact of a felony, interfering with the duties of a police officer, as well as numerous motor vehicle violations as the car was unregistered and uninsured.

Police say there were two young children in the car who were given to a family member who arrived at the scene.

Wareham Police are still searching for Jazz Tavares. He will be charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, operating to endanger, failure to stop for police and operating with a suspended license.

Police say Tavares is well-known to the Wareham Police Dept. He was arrested in 2014 with a stolen firearm in his possession. The above photo is from that 2014 arrest.

If you have any information, call police.
