Vigil held a year after woman was killed by driver allegedly calling drug dealer

BROCKTON, Mass. — October 3 marks the one-year anniversary since a Brockton woman was killed by a driver who police say was calling her drug dealer at the time of the crash, and dozens gathered to hold a vigil for the victim.

Friends and family gathered near the crash site to honor and celebrate the life of Debra Combra, one year to the day of her death.

Combra's husband, Manuel Combra, said it's been a painful year as he and the victim's loved ones mourn the loss, and continue to pray for justice.

"There isn't a day that I don't think about it, and it just hurts," Manuel Combra said. "How much I loved her, how much I miss her. I still feel like I'm in a wicked bad nightmare or dream, gonna come out of it and she's gonna be there."

Combra was killed when a driver rear-ended her, pushing the car into an oncoming dump truck, with the force the impact throwing Combra on the street.

"Just to have her go the way she went, without me saying goodbye, that was the hardest thing," the husband said.

Manuel Combra said it's even harder to watch the woman accused of causing the crash, Danielle Mastro, appear in court time after time.

Mastro told police she had been drinking, and was "dope sick" from withdrawal at the time of the crash. She said she was calling her drug dealer at the time, and then left the scene after rear-ending Combra's car.

"Then, she turned around, didn't have any remorse for it," Manuel Combra said. "Didn't even have a tear in her eye. Only tear she had was when they arrested her. That's because she finally got caught."

Combra's family is anxiously awaiting Mastro's trial in January as they plead for justice, and say they're hoping for a guilty verdict and a maximum sentence.

"We're gonna get justice for Deb, we're gonna get 'em," Manuel Combra said.

Mastro was charged with vehicular homicide and leaving the scene of a fatal crash and remains behind bars.
