Vehicle inspections across MA halted for third straight week

Another week and still no inspections at stations across the commonwealth. A cyber-attack on Applus Technologies is leading to the third straight week of locking auto shops and business out of processing and performing inspections.

“I’ve been doing inspections for the past 20 years and I’ve never seen this so bad,” said Eli Dellaleh of Canton Auto Service & Auto Body.

It proving to be a tricky and complicated fix.

“There is an axiom from the Winter Hill Gang: the deeper you dig, the more bodies you find. And as they dig into this they are going to find more and more problems, more and more issues, which means it’s going to take more and more time to essentially excavate or clean up the mess, and that is going to affect millions of vehicles on the road,” said Robert Siciliano, the CEO of Protect Now LLC. Com.

It’s affecting bottom lines in a big way at businesses like Canton Auto Service & Auto Body.

“What happened is we lost 60% of that business because we can’t not have the car to do the inspection,” Dellaleh said.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker was asked about compensation for business owners at a press conference on Monday.

“We fully expect the vendor to find a way to find a way to compensate the folks at the service station and dealer level that have been horribly inconvenienced by this,” Baker said.

Then there are the safety issues with thousands of cars going uninspected and still driving around the streets.

“I have people, out of nowhere, have their wheel pop out of nowhere because they are not getting inspections, people all of sudden, because they’re not having their car checked, that’s going to cause a lot of safety issues for other people too,” Dellaleh said.

The RMV has granted extensions for vehicles in certain situations.
