Unique proposal could help Chelmsford schools make up for snow days

CHELMSFORD, Mass, — Due to the amount of snow days Chelmsford schools have had this year, the school committee is considering a proposal to add 35 minutes to the school days to make-up for those days.

The idea is to add the 35 minutes to every school day in order to try and get out a week early in June. The plan would not be implemented before it receives the approval from the Department of Education.

The school committee has provided one survey regarding this proposal to parents and families and another one for employees and administrators.

In those surveys, 72 percent of parents and families were in favor of the idea, while 90 percent of the staff voted yes.

With those numbers in mind, the school committee took a vote on Tuesday night, where an overwhelming majority voted in favor of the proposal.

However, even though the vote has passed, the school committee's proposal is still contingent upon the approval from the Department of Education for permission to go forward with the plan, but their permission is still pending.
