Two inmates at Souza-Baranowski injured in fight involving homemade weapon

SHIRLEY, Mass. — A fight involving inmates at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center on Monday injured two of the three people involved.

According to prison officials, the fight broke out at the general population housing unit. Two inmates were stabbed with a “homemade weapon" where one had to be transported to an outside hospital for treatment. The housing unit will remain under lockdown as the investigation continues.

Staff and correctional officers were able to quickly separate the fight and secure the weapon.

As part of the Department of Corrections department-wide COVID-19 protocols, inmates are being let out in small groups to go shower and use the telephones.

The names of the inmates involved will not be released.
