Two arrested after reversing into police cruiser during traffic stop

TYNGSBOROUGH, Mass. — Two men are now behind bars after reversing into a marked Tyngsborough Police cruiser during a traffic stop.

The BMW the suspects were in was pulled over by an officer on Pawtucket Boulevard at around 5:53 a.m. Saturday.

“The vehicle did not stop right away," Tyngsborough Police Chief Richard Howe said. "It eventually did come to a stop, it pulled into a private driveway.”

Police say the BMW pulled into a driveway and the officer stopped his cruiser behind the car when the suspects suddenly reversed and hit the cruiser.

"The vehicle suddenly went straight backwards at the officer striking the officer’s cruiser," Howe said. "Striking it hard enough to push it back into the main road in the roadway.”

The officer was injured in the crash.

Police then arrested and charged the driver, Camilo Cruz, 27, of Newton with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, assault and battery on a police officer, destruction of property and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

One of the two passengers in the car, Jose Reyes, 49, of Roxbury, was arrested and held for warrants out of Boston Municipal Court for larceny and Roxbury District Court for drug possession.

“The three subjects did comply with the officer," Howe said.

The injured officer was treated and released at a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The cruiser, however, was totaled in the crash.

Both Cruz and Reyes are being held pending their arraignment Monday in Lowell District Court.
