Chao submitted her resignation from President Donald Trump’s Cabinet saying she was “deeply troubled” by the events at the Capitol by Trump supporters, NBC News reported.

Chao has been Transportation Secretary since Trump was inaugurated in 2017, The Hill reported.

Her resignation is effective Monday and her team will help President-elect Joe Biden’s nominee Pete Buttigieg with his transition to the office, The Hill reported.

Chao was tasked with rebuilding the country’s broken infrastructure of roads, bridges and highways, CNN reported.

Despite being married to Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, the administration’s $1.5 trillion infrastructure plan hit roadblocks in Congress, CNN reported.

Prior to her service in the Trump administration, Chao worked in both Bush administrations.
