In a news release, the Knox County Sheriff’s Office said that the remains were identified as those of Richard R. Young, 71, who was the chief in Maquon village.

According to the sheriff’s office, Young’s identity was confirmed after DNA was taken from the decomposed remains discovered in the storage unit and comparing it to samples from his relatives, WLS-TV reported.

It is unclear how Young died, according to the television station. His remains were discovered on Oct. 7, 2022, at Roberts Self Storage in Maquon, WLS reported. Knox County deputies investigated after receiving a complaint about an odor coming from the storage unit.

Marcy Lyn Oglesby, 50, of Maquon, was originally charged with first-degree murder and concealing the death of a person, according to The Register-Mail of Galesburg.

She has pleaded not guilty to the charges and remains in custody at the Knox County Jail.

The Journal Star of Peoria reported that a judge dismissed charges of murder, aggravated battery, and concealment of a homicidal death earlier this month because the state violated Oglesby’s right to a speedy trial, according to WGIL radio in Galesburg. The state’s attorney plans to appeal the judge’s ruling, according to the newspaper.
