According to a recall notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the onions are potentially contaminated with listeria monocytogenes.

“We are glad that most of the implicated product never reached stores, but we are focused intently on alerting consumers in those areas that did receive the onions.” Aries Haygood, co-owner of A&M Farms, said in a statement. “We stopped packing on the implicated line, and I am personally overseeing a full cleaning and sanitation of the equipment and an internal review of our processes.”

The recalled onions have stickers showing the Little Bear brand and the PLU 4159 or 4166.

The onions were sold at Wegmans stores on June 23 and June 24 and Publix stores on June 22-24.

The onions were sold at Wegmans stores in Massachusetts; Rochester, New York; and in Pennsylvania at the Erie West and Erie Peach Street locations.

They were sold at Publix stores across Florida and in selected stores (listed below) in Georgia.

While 6-pound bags of the onions were shipped to Sam’s Clubs, the company says they were not put out for sale to customers.

There have been no reported cases of illness, according to A&M Farms. The FDA urges consumers with bags of the onions that fall under the recall to return them to the store where they were purchased for a refund.

Food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still cause serious and sometimes life-threatening infections.

Symptoms of listeria infection can include vomiting, nausea, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness. Specific laboratory tests are required to diagnose listeria infections, which can mimic other illnesses.

Consumers with questions may contact the company’s information desk at 1-912-585-2058, M-F, 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. EDT.
