Recall alert: More than 1 million Sunbeam crock-pots recalled due to burn risk

BOCA RATON, Fla. — Sunbeam Products is recalling more than 900,000 of its Crock-Pot 6-Quart Express Crock Multi-Cookers in the United States and another nearly 30,000 in Canada due to a potential burn hazard.

The Boca Raton, Florida-based company announced the voluntary recall just two days before Thanksgiving via the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

According to the commission, the problem involves the crock-pot potentially pressurizing “when the lid is not fully locked.” In turn, the lid can abruptly detach, “posing burn risks to consumers from hot food and liquids ejected from the product.”

The commission urged product owners to “immediately stop” using the multi-cookers in pressure cooker mode but stated slow cooking and sautéing appear to pose no risk.

To date, Sunbeam has received 119 reports of the lids detaching, resulting in “99 burn injuries ranging in severity from first-degree to third-degree burns,” according to the recall notice.

The recall affects an estimated 914,410 crock-pots sold in the United States and 28,330 sold in Canada, both in brick-and-mortar stores and online by such retailers as Walmart, Target and Amazon between July 2017 and this month.

The recalled products, which sold for between $70 and $100, have date codes K196JN through K365JN and L001JN through L273JN engraved on either the bottom of the base or on one prong of the electrical plugs.
