According to a news release from Sault Ste. Marie Police Department, an adult and a juvenile have been charged with torturing animals in the third degree, which is a felony that has a penalty of imprisonment for no more than four years, a $5,000 fine and community service for no more than 500 hours.

SSMPD identified the adult as Jasmine Elise Clark. Clark was arraigned on Nov. 18 and was given a $10,000 bond.

The juvenile has not been identified because of their age and has been referred to the juvenile court, according to WPBN.

According to WPBN, on Nov. 16, SSMPD rescued a puppy that was reportedly dropped over a railing on the Spruce Street Bridge. Police said the puppy was dropped several feet into a fenced area near the Cloverland Power canal. The puppy was unable to escape because of the fencing and the condition of the canal.

SSMPD said an officer lowered himself over the bridge into the fenced area. The officer lifted the puppy over his head and passed it to another officer waiting on the bridge above them. The puppy was unharmed.

The puppy was taken to the Chippewa County Animal Shelter but SSMPD said it has since been adopted by one of the officers who was involved in the rescue.

According to SSMPD, video surveillance of the incident was obtained from the community through social media, which led to the charges.

No further information has been released.
