Microchip miracle: Texas woman reunited with lost dog after 7-year separation

SAN ANTONIO — Thanks to a microchip, a rescue dog named Honey has been reunited with his San Antonio owner following a seven-year separation.

According to officials with San Antonio Animal Care Services, Honey was taken to the shelter as a stray last week, and employees discovered the microchip, KSAT reported.

“We called the owner and let them know Honey would be at the shelter. While he was getting his initial shots upon entering our shelter, our staff got a call that his owner had already made it to ACS to reclaim in our front office,” the shelter posted on Facebook.

According to the post, a shelter employee walked Honey to the front of the facility to see if he would recognize the person retrieving him.

“The woman burst into tears as soon as she saw him, fell to her knees, and held him in her arms. She began to ask him if he remembered who she was,” the post stated, noting the woman told shelter employees her dog had been missing nearly seven years.

“He did (recognize her), and she started hugging and kissing her dog, who returned her affection with a wildly wagging tail,” ACS spokesperson Lisa Norwood told KSAT.

All pets who are adopted from the San Antonio shelter leave with a lifetime registered microchip upon adoption, KHOU reported.

The practice, KSAT reported, complies with San Antonio’s microchip law, requiring all dogs, cats and ferrets residing within city limits obtain a registered microchip.

“Because of (the microchip), Honey and his mom are now finally able to live their happily ever after!” the post concluded.
