Iowa volunteers locked up in kennels with dogs to highlight lives of shelter animals

DESOTO, Iowa — Men and women were in lockdown at an Iowa animal shelter.

It was purely voluntary, but the people stayed locked in kennels with dogs for 24 hours beginning Saturday to highlight the life of dogs at an animal shelter, KCCI reported.

The volunteers at the AHeinz 57 shelter in DeSoto had to follow the same routine as the dogs, eating and using the restrooms only when the dogs did.

In a Facebook post, shelter officials wrote they had a goal of raising $30,000 for the event and were closing in on their goal, as $28,000 had been raised by midday Sunday.

Officials said for every $500 donated, volunteers would receive a “special treat,” KCCI reported.
