Baby chimpanzee born at Kansas zoo

WICHITA, Kan. — Kansas’ Sedgwick County Zoo has announced an adorable new arrival – a baby chimpanzee.

According to KAKE and KWCH, the Wichita attraction took to Facebook to announce that mother Mahale, 28, welcomed a male infant via cesarean section Tuesday.

“Baby had a bit of trouble getting enough oxygen at birth, so he is being treated in the zoo’s vet hospital by animal care staff,” the zoo wrote Wednesday alongside a video of the newborn. “Today, he is doing extremely well and should be able to be reunited with mom very soon!”

It’s a BOY! Chimpanzee Mahale gave birth to a baby boy yesterday, Nov. 15, via C-section performed by Drs. Whisler and Chibry of College Hill OB-GYN along with the Zoo Veterinary team. Baby had a bit of trouble getting enough oxygen at birth, so he is being treated in the Zoo’s Vet hospital by animal care staff. Today he is doing extremely well and should be able to be reunited with mom very soon! We’ll keep you updated on his progress!

The baby, whose name has not been revealed, is Mahale’s third offspring, the news outlets reported.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources considers chimpanzees endangered. The organization estimates that fewer than 299,000 remain in the wild, according to the organization’s website.
