Amy Klobuchar drops out of VP stakes, says Biden should pick woman of color

Sen. Amy Klobuchar on Thursday night took herself out of the Democratic vice-presidential stakes, saying that Joe BIden should pick a woman of color as his running mate.

“This is a historic moment, and America must seize on this moment. And I truly believe as, I actually told the vice president last night when I called him, that I think this is a moment to put a woman of color on that ticket,” Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, told MSNBC’s Lawrence O’Donnell.

Klobuchar told the Star-Tribune of Minneapolis that she reached out to Biden to ask him to pull her name from his list, and not the other way around.

Klobuchar, Minnesota’s senator since 2007, ran for the Democratic presidential nomination this year and finished a surprising third in the New Hampshire primary. However, she was unable to build on that success and dropped out of the race.

Klobuchar, who endorsed Biden after dropping out of the presidential race, would not speculate on who Biden might choose as a running mate. Several possibilities include Sen. Kamala Harris of California, Rep. Val Demings of Florida, Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham and Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.

Klobuchar said Thursday that Biden’s decision could help “heal” the country.

“There are so many incredibly qualified women, but if you want to heal this nation right now, my party yes, but our nation, this is sure a hell of a way to do it,” Klobuchar told MSNBC.
