MADISON, Wis. — An 11-year-old Wisconsin girl who was shot in the head Tuesday has died, Madison police confirmed Thursday.
According to WMTV, the shooting occurred shortly before noon Tuesday near East Washington and Lexington avenues in Madison. Anisa Scott, a passenger in a vehicle driven by a man who was taking care of her, was struck as occupants of two cars exchanged gunfire, Madison police said. Police believe the shooter had been trying to hit the driver, not the girl, WISC reported.
Scott, who was shot in the head, was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, authorities said. She underwent surgery and was in a medically induced coma, a relative told WMTV on Tuesday night.
"The men and women of the MPD would like to offer her family and friends heartfelt condolences, and to let them know that our Violent Crime Unit detectives, and other MPD personnel, are working very hard to find those responsible for this senseless murder," the post read.
Police are still working to identify suspects in the shooting, WISC reported.
