Teen expelled for allegedly setting off stink bomb in class

ATLANTA — A mother is fighting to get her son back into school after he was expelled for allegedly setting off a stink bomb.

Kimberly Brown says her 13-year-old son never touched the stink bomb set off at Ralph Bunche Middle School in Atlanta.

The incident led to Brown's son being expelled from the middle school.

"He said the boy had it beside me and he threw it down. I didn't touch anything," Brown said.

Brown says her son is innocent and she says his expulsion was heavy-handed.

"He's kind of depressed right now and I wants something to be done. I don't want this on my son's record saying he did something that he did not do," Brown said.

An Atlanta Public Schools report said students complained of a foul smell and upset stomachs. Two students and a teacher needed to go to the clinic.

In a statement APS said: "In this matter, the student violated the district's code of conduct in his connection to an incendiary device being released in a classroom. The parent agreed to the action taken by the district."

Brown says she is now disagreeing with the severity of the discipline. She points out a recent incident in another school district where a student brought poppers into a school.

"She went back to school. The kids who participated got one day, and my son is still out of school. He's withdrawn. He's nowhere," Brown said.

WSBTV's Carl Willis reports three other students accused of being involved in this incident. Willis says it's not clear how they were punished if at all.

Brown said she will continue to fight the ruling.
