School district to remodel locker rooms to be non-gender specific

NEW HOLLAND, Pa. — A school district in Pennsylvania will be spending $2.4 million to renovate the high school's locker rooms so they are nongender specific.

The school board for the Eastern Lancaster County School District unanimously greenlit the project at Garden Spot High School, WGAL reported.

The remodel will create four zones with 76 private showers and an additional 48 private changing areas.

The decision was made after a transgender student, who was born female but identifies a male, fought to use the male locker rooms, WGAL reported.

The new facilities are being called a "ready area" and will help guarantee students' privacy and safety, district officials said, according to Lancaster Online.

School Board President Glenn Yoder says the design idea will become popular in other school districts when other leaders have to consider the privacy of their students, Lancaster Online reported.

The project is expected to be completed by next December, with demolition starting in March.
