Organic nut butters recalled over possible listeria contamination

Five varieties of Whole Pantry organic nut butters, manufactured by the Wakefern Food Corp., are being recalled over possible listeria contamination.

Organic almond, sunflower and tahini butters are being recalled over possible listeria contamination.

The five varieties of Whole Pantry organic nut butters, manufactured by the Wakefern Food Corp., were sold in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, Delaware, Rhode Island and Virginia, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

The recall includes 16 ounce packages of:

  • Creamy Salted Almond Butter with UPC: 04119006004

  • Creamy Unsalted Almond Butter with UPC: 04119006005

  • Unsalted Sunflower Butter with UPC: 04119005827

  • Tahini Butter with UPC: 04119005828

  • Cashew Butter with UPC: 04119006006

Customers were informed to return them for a refund or replacement.

Wakefern was told by its supplier, Oskri Organics, that some of its nut butters had tested positive for listeria monocytogenes. No Wholesome Pantry Organic nut butter tested positive The recall was prompted as a precaution.

Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause sometimes fatal infections in children and older people and those with weaker immune systems. It can cause nausea, fever and severe headaches in healthy people. No illnesses have been reported related to the recall.
