COPPERAS COVE, Texas — A Texas mother was arrested after a struggle in which she thrashed on the ground and tried to pull away from officers, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released Monday.
KWTX reported that 26-year-old Samantha Grace Vaughan was being arrested for leaving her baby boy asleep in a running vehicle while she was inside a Copperas Cove, Texas, nightclub on Sunday.
Another officer went inside the club about six minutes later, KWTX reported. He found the boy's mother, who said she went inside to pick up her husband and use the restroom. She said she sat with her husband and had two shots.
KWTX reported that officers smelled "a strong odor commonly associated with the consumption of an alcoholic beverage emitting from her person," according to the affidavit.
According to the document, Vaughan was pulling away as officers attempted to take her into custody. She also dropped to the ground and thrashed, the affidavit said. Once in a patrol unit, she "'smashed her forehead into the steel bar" causing a small cut on her head. While being taken into custody, officers said she yelled obscenities and a racial slur, KWTX reported. WGMB reported that court papers said she threatened an officer and his family.
A preliminary breath test administered at the Copperas Cove Police Department showed her blood alcohol level was 0.148. The legal limit in Texas is 0.08, according to KWTX.
