'I'm standing next to my son's killer': Teen who grieved with mom charged in shooting

EMPORIA, Va. — A Virginia woman says she was stunned to learn a 15-year-old boy who grieved alongside her after her son was fatally shot is accused of his slaying, WTVR reported.

Jaquan Crumpler, 20, was found shot to death in his Emporia bedroom on Feb. 14, the television station reported.

On Feb. 21, police arrested the teen after a week of investigation, charging him with first-degree murder and the use of a firearm in a felony, WRIC reported. He is being held at a juvenile detention center, the television station reported.

Crumpler’s mother could not hide her disbelief.

"He came over here after my son passed every day and grieved with us," LaToia Crumpler told WTVR. "He told me it would be OK -- and the whole time I'm standing next to my son's killer.

"They knew each other, they hung with each other. He used to always say,  ‘You can't trust nobody.’"

Emporia police Chief Ricky Pinksaw said the case was baffling.

"It's really hard to make sense out of nonsense and for an individual to perpetrate the act that he did on the victim," Pinksaw told WTVR. "Then to go back and grieve with family makes no sense to me."
