TOWNSEND, Mass. — A Massachusetts family is asking for help as they plan a last minute wedding for their son who’s losing his years-long battle with cancer.
Philip Dwyer, of Townsend, and Katerina Mesa, of Miami, have been together for the past four years. They met in a chemotherapy suite at Dana Farber’s Jimmy Fund Clinic in Boston and fell in love during an interlude in treatment.
The couple planned to get married late next year, but unfortunately, Dwyer is losing his six-year fight with osteosarcoma, the most common type of bone cancer.
Last week, Dwyer’s doctors stopped treatment and sent him home. He’s currently in hospice and his family says time is very short.
Mesa, a cancer survivor herself, wants to marry her beloved boyfriend while he’s still able to.
The couple is trying to get married on November 4. of this year.
“Because the wedding is so unexpected, we cannot afford to give them the wedding that they were planning on and deserve,” Steve Dwyer, Philip’s father, said. “We need help from everyone to make this a special day for both of them.”
The family has set up a GoFundMe page to collect donations.
