• Third annual 5K honors Vanessa Marcotte's life

BOSTON - Friends and family of Vanessa Marcotte honored her life with a third annual 5K run and walk on Wachusett Mountain.

More than a thousand people gathered on Saturday at the event to take part and remember her life and legacy.

The event was organized by the foundation that bears Marcotte's name, which aims to ensure that what happened to her doesn't happen to other women.

Caroline Tocci, Marcotte's cousin, told Boston 25 News the foundation strives to empower women to live boldly and fearlessly.

"It's such a fun day, it's just really gratifying to see the whole community come out and honor Vanessa and just the fact that she's making an impact even though she's no longer here," said Tocci.

Marcotte, a Boston University graduate and former Google employee, would've turned 30 this weekend. She was murdered three years ago while jogging near her mother's home in Princeton, Mass.

A man has been indicted for her murder, but his trial isn't expected to start until later this year or early next year.
