Templeton man injured; woman & gunman killed in Tennessee shooting

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. — A 75-year-old Templeton man is recovering after police say he was shot outside a Tennessee outlet mall.

Investigators say the gunman and an innocent woman from Pennsylvania are dead after the random shooting near Great Smoky Mountains National Park before killing himself.

The woman was 24-year-old Olivia Katel Cunningham of York, Pennsylvania. The wounded man, 75-year-old John Marr of Templeton, Massachusetts, was taken to University of Tennessee Medical Center. A family member told Boston 25 News he is already out of the hospital.

The gunman was identified as 21-year-old Leon Steven Jones of Newport-Sevierville, Tennessee.

Police said Jones was armed with a semi-automatic handgun. They believe the shooting was random because the victims didn’t know the gunman or each other.

Marr was outside with at least one family member when he was shot.

"When officers got here, we didn't know what we were going to encounter,” Sevierville police spokesperson Bob Stahlke said. “But talking to witnesses and being in the situation, we discerned pretty quickly that that was a single shooter."

Sevierville is located about 30 miles southeast of Knoxville and is about a ten minute ride from the popular tourist attraction Dollywood.
