Teen arrested for Snapchat threat telling students not to go to school

WRENTHAM, Mass. — Officials are urging parents to talk to their children about social media posts after a local student was arrested.

Wrentham Police were contacted by staff at King Philip Regional High School on Monday morning that a student posted a threatening photo and message on social media.

In the post directed at some of the suspect's friends, he showed a toy airsoft rifle with a message that read, "If I sent this to you, don't go to school Monday. I'm making my list, checking it twice, going to see who is naughty or nice."

The student was immediately removed from class, interviewed by staff and police and then suspended from the school. The student, who has no history of disciplinary action, insisted he meant no harm and posted as a joke between his friends.

Despite his remorse, he cannot return to school until he has successfully completed a 10-day safety evaluation. He will also face criminal charges through Dedham Juvenile Court, which may include a court-ordered psychological evaluation.

Police are asking parents to sit down with their children to talk about social media and that "joke" posts like the one above are not acceptable and will result in charges.

The student's name will not be released.
