Study: Massachusetts marijuana prices slightly above national average

People who purchase marijuana in Massachusetts will be paying slightly above the national average, according to a recent study on the average price of marijuana by state.

Oxford Treatment Center used the Price of Weed, a global price index for marijuana, to gather the average price of high and medium-quality marijuana in each state. Researchers also looked at the prices for one ounce of marijuana and one joint, which a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services study defines as being equal to 0.66 grams of pot.

  • National Average: $326.06

  • Most Expensive: $550.66 (Washington, D.C.)
  • Massachusetts: $283
  • Least Expensive:  $187.09 (Mississippi)
  • National Average: $265.58
Average Cost: One “Joint” of High-Quality Marijuana
  • Most Expensive: $13.92 (Washington, D.C.)
  • Massachusetts: $7.93
  • Least Expensive: $4.91 (Oregon)
  • National Average: $7.59
Average Cost: One “Joint” of Medium-Quality Marijuana
  • Most Expensive: $12.82 (Washington, D.C.)
  • Massachusetts: $6.59
  • Least Expensive: $3.96 (Mississippi)
  • National Average: $6.18

According to the 2015 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 22.2 million people surveyed said they used pot in the past month.

Massachusetts residents voted to legalize recreational marijuana in 2016. The first two recreational pot shops opened two years later.
