Sox trade Lester, Lackey, Gomes, Drew ahead of trade deadline

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The Boston Red Sox traded Jon Lester, John Lackey, Jonny Gomes and Stephen Drew ahead of the trade deadline Thursday.

Gomes and Lester were traded to the A's in exchange for slugger Yoenis Cespedes. The Sox also gave the A's cash considerations. Oakland gave Boston a 2015 competitive balance draft pick.

Cespedes, who has been in the league since 2012, will wear number 52 for the Sox. The two-time Home Run Derby winner is batting .256/.303/.464 with 17 homers and 67 RBI.
Lester, a two-time World Series champion, began his career in Boston. The 30-year-old is 10-7 with a 2.52 ERA and 149 strikeouts in 21 starts (143 innings) this season.

Gomes, 33, used to play for the A's and was signed by the Sox in December 2012.
